В фильме рассказывается о становлении советского хоккеиста Валерия Харламова.
Фильм открывают яркие воспоминания 1956 года о детских переживаниях во время забега быков в Испании, откуда была родом мама Харламова. Затем действие переносится в Москву, в 1967 год, где молодой хоккеист знакомится со знаменитым тренером Анатолием Тарасовым, который отправляет Валерия вместе с его другом Александром Гусевым в город Чебаркуль Челябинской области, где им предстоит выступать за местную «Звезду». Преодолев сложности адаптации в команде низшей лиги, Валерий показывает результативный хоккей и в конце сезона возвращается в Москву, где Тарасов приглашает его присоединиться к ЦСКА, но на первых порах проверяет характер Харламова и его способность полностью отдавать свою жизнь хоккею.
Харламов проходит все испытания Тарасова и постепенно становится одним из ведущих нападающих ЦСКА, а затем и сборной СССР. Тренер создаёт тройку нападения Михайлов—Петров—Харламов. Параллельно вокруг Тарасова плетёт интриги куратор хоккея из ЦК КПСС Эдуард Борисович Балашов, сына которого тренер когда-то отчислил из команды. Балашов пытается перетянуть Харламова на свою сторону, акцентируя внимание на излишней жёсткости Тарасова, но хоккеист отказывается подписывать какие-либо бумаги против своего тренера (впоследствии Харламов расскажет всё Тарасову, но тот скажет Харламову, что он и так всё знал).
На фоне развития хоккейной карьеры Харламова показана и история его знакомства и любви с Ириной Смирновой, которая старается поддержать хоккеиста в трудные моменты.
После скандального матча между сборной СССР и «Спартаком», когда Тарасов в знак протеста против судейства увёл сборную со льда, расстроенный Харламов попадает в аварию и серьёзно травмирует ногу (в фильме этот эпизод биографии хоккеиста переставлен на 4 года назад). После операции Валерий начинает разрабатывать ногу с тем, чтобы как можно скорее вернуться на лёд, так как на 1972 год назначена первая в истории серия встреч сборной СССР с канадскими профессионалами. Превозмогая боль, Харламов начинает тренироваться, и новый тренер сборной Всеволод Бобров, назначенный вместо Тарасова, включает Валерия в состав команды, улетающей на игры в Канаду. Тарасов приходит проводить команду в аэропорт и говорит напутственные слова Харламову.
Советские хоккеисты прилетают в Монреаль. Канадцы уверены в победе своей команды и всячески пытаются доказать это СССР: на пресс-конференции канадский журналист заявляет, что в случае победы советской команды съест вечерний выпуск газеты, а на телешоу два лидера канадской сборной Фил Эспозито и Бобби Кларк намекают, что у советской команды нет шансов на победу. Наконец, перед самим матчем Боброву под дверь номера кладут газету с карикатурой, где советские хоккеисты в виде «сопливого» ученика учатся играть в хоккей у канадского «учителя».
Начинается матч. Канадцы выигрывают вбрасывание и уже через полминуты открывают счёт в матче. На шестой минуте счёт 2:0. Но вскоре сборная СССР сравнивает счёт, а во втором периоде Харламов выводит команду вперёд 2:3. Свою вторую шайбу Валерий забросил, накрутив нескольких соперников, после этого гола все зрители аплодируют Харламову стоя. В перерыве тренер канадцев говорит своим подопечным, что это не матч, а война, и с этим «номером семнадцатым» надо разобраться. Во время игры Бобби Кларк с размаху бьёт Харламова клюшкой по задней части колена больной ноги. Однако последний отказывается покинуть игру, несмотря на угрозу стать инвалидом, и возвращается на лёд. В конце матча Валерий, несясь с шайбой к воротам канадцев, падает от боли, но, падая, делает голевую передачу, после которой в ворота канадцев влетает седьмая шайба. По окончании матча Фил Эспозито говорит Харламову, что поражён его игрой, скоростью и двумя голами.
Эпизодично показывается почти телепатическая связь между тренером Тарасовым, переживающим события на матче, находясь в осенней Москве, и игроками на арене стадиона. Параллельно Харламову представляется коррида.
Сборная СССР забивает ещё несколько шайб при активном участии Харламова и одерживает победу с разгромным счетом 7:3.

Legend No. 17 (Russian: Легенда №17) is a 2013 Russian biographical sports film directed by Nikolai Lebedev and produced by Trite Studio. The film is based on real events and tells of the rise to fame of the Soviet hockey player Valeri Kharlamov and about the first match of the Summit Series USSR — Canada 1972.[4]
The film was awarded with six Golden Eagle awards, including the best Russian film of the year.
The filmmakers received the State Prize of the Russian Federation for the year 2013.
Plot[edit]
The picture begins set in 1956 with children’s experiences during the Running of the Bulls in Spain where Kharlamov’s mother originally was from. Then the action is transferred to Moscow in 1967, where the young hockey player gets acquainted with the famous trainer Anatoly Tarasov, who sends Valeri along with his friend Alexander Gusev to the city of Chebarkul, Chelyabinsk Oblast, where they will play for the local «Zvezda» team. Having overcome the difficulties of adaptation in the lower league team, Valeri displays effective hockey skills and returns to Moscow at the end of the season where Tarasov invites him to join HC CSKA Moscow, but at first Anatoli tests Kharlamov’s character and his ability to dedicate his life to hockey.
Kharlamov passes all of Tarasov’s trials and gradually becomes one of the leading attackers of CSKA, and then the USSR national team. The trainer constructs an attack trio of Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov. At the same time intrigues are waged around Tarasov by the curator of hockey from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Eduard Balashov, whose son the coach once expelled from the team. Balashov tries to drag Kharlamov to his side, stressing Tarasov’s excessive rigidity, but the hockey player refuses to sign any papers against his coach (Kharlamov later tells Tarasov everything but Anatoli responds that he already knew everything).
Against the background of the development of Kharlamov’s hockey career, the story of his acquaintance and love with Irina Smirnova is shown, who tries to support the hockey player in difficult moments.
After the scandalous match between the USSR national team and HC Spartak Moscow, when Tarasov led the team away from the ice in a protest against refereeing, the upset Kharlamov gets into a car accident and seriously injures his leg (in the film this biographical episode of the hockey player was shifted to be four years earlier). After the operation Valeri begins to exercise his leg in order to return to the ice as soon as possible since the first Summit Series in history between the USSR national team and the Canadian professionals is scheduled for 1972. Overcoming his injuries Kharlamov begins to train, and the new coach of the national team Vsevolod Bobrov, appointed instead of Tarasov, includes Valeri in the team that flies to play in Canada. Tarasov comes to escort the team to the airport and says parting words to Kharlamov.
The Soviet hockey players arrive in Montreal. The Canadians are confident in the victory of their team and are trying in every possible way to prove this to the USSR: at a press conference a Canadian journalist says that he will eat the evening edition of his newspaper if the Soviet team wins, and on a television show two leaders of the Canadian national team, Phil Esposito and Bobby Clarke, hint that the Soviet team has no chance of victory. In conclusion, before the match a newspaper is slid under the door of Bobrov’s room with a caricature depicting the Soviet hockey players as «snotty» pupils who learn to play hockey with the Canadian «teacher».
The match begins. The Canadians win the first face-off and in half a minute open the score. At the sixth minute the score is 2:0. But soon the USSR team makes the score even, and in the second period, Kharlamov leads the team ahead 2:3. Valeri stickhandles through several opponents and scores his second goal. After this goal all spectators give a standing ovation to Kharlamov. During the intermission, the Canadian coach tells his players that this is not a match, but a war, and instructed Bobby Clarke to deal with the «Number Seventeen». During the game Bobby Clarke slashes Kharlamov’s previously injured knee with a stick. However, Valeri refuses to leave the game despite danger of aggravating his injury and ending his hockey career, and returns to the ice. At the end of the match, Valeri rushes with the puck towards the Canadians’ goal, aggravates his injury and falls down, but while sliding in prone position, passes the puck to one of this teammates who scores the seventh goal for the Soviet team. After the match Phil Esposito tells Kharlamov that he is impressed by his game, speed, and the two goals.
The USSR squad scores several more goals with Kharlamov’s active participation and wins with a crushing score 7:3.

- When the script of «Legend No. 17» was being developed, the feature film by Yuri Korolev «Valeri Kharlamov. Additional Time» aired on television which was sharply criticized by Valeri’s son, Alexander Kharlamov, who collaborated with the authors of «No. 17».[5]
- The filming period of the picture was 74 days.[6] All the scenes in Spain were shot in 4 days.
- A number of locations shown in the film which truly existed at one time or at present were filmed elsewhere. The CSKA Ice Palace is Kristall Ice Sports Palace in Elektrostal near Moscow.[7] In the «role» of the famous Montreal Forum was the Minsk-Arena, during the construction of which some architectural solutions were used of the Canadian arena, according to the producer of the film. The stadium of the Chebarkul «Zvezda» was built especially for shooting right on the territory of the tennis center in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.[6] Shooting also took place in the Moscow Sports Palace Soviet Wings in Setuni.[8]
- For the airport building in the film the Moscow City Palace of Children’s Creativity on Vorobyovy Gory was used.[6]
- Shooting of the matches of the 1972 Olympic Games hockey tournament in Sapporo took place in Belarus, on the ice arena of the city of Babruysk.[9]
- The initial scenes of the film with training in Moscow, where Tarasov first noticed Kharlamov, were shot in the ice palace of the city of Novopolotsk.
Reception[edit]
The film received approval and high ratings from the overwhelming majority of Russian critics and publications about cinema: from 55 reviews on it 47 were positive and only 6 negative.[10] «Legend № 17» was praised by the magazines Empire,[11] Afisha,[12] the newspaper Trud,[13] sites ru.IGN,[14] Colta,[15] Gazeta.ru.[16] Among the few reviewers who sharply condemned the film, was Andrei Bodrov in the newspaper Sovetsky Sport.[17] Valeri Kharlamov’s best friend, Alexander Maltsev disapproved of the film and said that he does not intend on seeing it.[18]
Film critic Elena Stishova wrote that «Adrenaline is the key word for Nikolai Lebedev’s picture» and notes that «The success of ‘Legend’ … «strongly tests the spiritual deficiencies of the «silent majority». There is a need for a hero who is «one of us», for the «life affirming» story, for the happy end not in a glossy Hollywood style — but in the society’s sense: when everything is fair».[19]
The picture took 97th place in the list of 100 major Russian films according to the magazine «Afisha».[20] In 2017 the film portal KinoPoisk named the movie as the most popular one in Russia in the last 15 years.[21]

Кинокартина рассказывает о легендарном матче, благодаря которому прославился Валерий Харламов. Уникальная и неповторимая игра состоялась 2 сентября в 1972 году. Валерий, можно сказать, добился всего своим упорством и стремлением к цели. До него советский хоккей даже не мечтал о победе НХЛ, только об участии. Валерий же забил аж две шайбы во время игры, что и сделало его легендой. Конечно, в становлении хоккеиста помогал и тренер — Анатолий Тарасов (актер Олег Меньшиков). Он верил в успех Харламова. Молодой хоккеист долго стремился к тому, чтобы стать лучшим. Он и его тренер как люди-глыбы шли вперед, закрывая глаза и на советский режим и на слово невозможно. В то время победить канадцев со счетом 7:3 представлялось невозможным, фантастическим. В советскую команду никто не верил.
Молодой хоккеист Валерий Харламов (Козловский) попадается на глаза эксцентричному тренеру АнатолиюТарасову (Меньшиков) и по его протекции оказывается в команде «Звезда» города Чебаркуль. Став ведущим игроком провинциального клуба, он все же добирается до тарасовского ЦСКА, но звездной карьере и заветным матчам с канадцами предшествует череда разочарований и непростые отношения с тренером.

Тем интереснее, что фильм об исторической победе над канадцами получился на удивление голливудским. В каком-то смысле это наш «Рокки», наш «Король говорит!», бессовестный краудплизер, выверенный механизм, без промаха бьющий в то немногое, что до сих пор остается для каждого почти святым, и приправленный человечностью ровно на столько, чтобы шестеренки не бросались в глаза. Да, иногда и здесь случаются режиссерские казусы вроде вступительной корриды (как ни крути, такие вещи поддаются только испанцам) или сомнительно нарисованных компьютерных панорам. Но придираться к таким мелочам глупо, раз уж нам в этот раз дали главное. В последнее время еще никому не удавалось так ловко прикрутить к универсальной истории о большой мечте столь мощный заряд патриотизма, причем патриотизма нестыдного, неказенного. Любите вы хоккей или нет, в паре моментов невозможно не прослезиться
За последние семь лет Олег Меньшиков появлялся на большом экране только в «Утомленных солнцем 2».
Оказывается, если постараться, железная заокеанская схема прекрасно чувствует себя и среди березок. Режиссер Николай Лебедев уравновешивает красавца-героя с решительным взглядом (Козловский и правда наш самый голливудский герой) выдающимися возрастными актерами, взвалившими на себя все решающие эпизоды. В Калифорнии так заведено с незапамятных времен – и ничего, весь мир смотрит, как Том Круз поправляет стильные очки, а стоящий рядом Дастин Хоффман тихо творит свои профессиональные чудеса. Про Тарасова картина в результате рассказывает больше, чем про собственно Харламова, но виной тому не сценарий, а невероятная работа Олега Меньшикова (эпизод, где он словно китайский каллиграф расчерчивает палочкой дворовую площадку, просто обречен стать национальной киноклассикой).
На самом деле автомобильная авария, в результате которой Харламов долго набирал форму, произошла уже после матчей с Канадой.
Авторам удается обойти даже самую распространенную отечественную мину – политику. С идеологической точки зрения картина абсолютно стерильна. Канадцев здесь надо побить не как представителей капстраны, а как заносчивых Голиафов, монополизировавших шайбу с клюшкой в глазах мирового сообщества. Все обстоятельства, благодаря и вопреки которым сборная и Харламов идут к этой всеобщей победе, даны пунктиром. В конце концов, нелюбовь велеречивых функционеров к гениальному, но хамоватому тренеру не зависит от конкретного исторического момента. Попади такой материал к режиссеру с тягой к масштабным обобщениям (например, к Никите Михалкову, выступающему здесь в качестве продюсера), Харламов воевал бы не столько с Филом Эспозито и Бобби Кларком, сколько с почти трогательным номенклатурным мерзавцем в исполнении Владимира Меньшова (актер так лихо совмещает злодейство с уютным житейским обаянием, что временами напоминает Олега Борисова из «Слуги»).
Лебедев же ни разу не пережимает, ограничивает суперсерию одним триумфальным матчем (по сумме восьми игр в тяжелейшей борьбе тогда выиграла все-таки Канада) и всячески старается делать акцент на столь актуальном во все времена тарасовском девизе, звучащем эхом и после фильма: «Веселее, мы в хоккее!»
